Spatial Division Multiplexing (SDM) is currently explored in order to meet the continuously increasing data traffic demand. One approach of SDM is based on mode division multiplexing (MDM), which utilizes individual transversal modes of a multi-mode fibre for data transmission. However, main aspects and also challenges of MDM are the scalability of the system to a large number of mode channels with low insertion loss and mode dependent loss, and also modal selectivity.
